Health Informatics Management Concentration

Bay Path University's Doctor of Health Science (DHSc) - Health Informatics Management Concentration is designed for those seeking education and training focusing on electronic medical-health related data that is generated and stored in health care and public health organizations. The program is 100% online and made up of  16 courses (12 core courses and 4 elective courses) for a total of 48 credits.

Completion of this concentration helps healthcare professional to position themselves as knowledgeable of trends and best practices in electronic information systems and applications, data collection and data analysis, program design, implementation, management and the application of the systems to the patient, and electronic health records.

HCM501 Healthcare Law, Policy and Ethics 3

This course addresses the legal issues that are most prevalent in the delivery of healthcare. Emphasis will be on the common issues that healthcare professionals encounter. The student will be introduced to various legal terms, policy and statutes and their relationship to the healthcare system process. Additionally the student will be provided with foundational knowledge regarding healthcare law and ethics and the effect on healthcare policy.

HCM520 Health Data Management 3

This course introduces data management and database technologies, including relational database systems and the structured query language (SQL). In addition, data warehousing and more analytic databases also are introduced, along with online analytic processing (OLAP) tolls to support decision making. Data quality issues, emerging cloud databases and other special topics will round out the coverage. Finally, the course offers a brief introduction to data mining techniques.

HCM522 Heath Informatics Systems and Data Infrastructure 3

This course discusses the system analysis lifecycle; planning, analysis, design, implementation and evaluation of healthcare software. Database technologies, programming languages (SQL, Java) and how they are used to structure the software will be explored. Development of network principles, design methods as well as system integration tools to exchange data in a secure manner are reviewed. Key concepts of business continuity, technical security, data mining, maintenance, virtual network and disaster recovery will complete the course.

HCM523 Health Informatics System Application 3

This course provides students with an understanding of how health informatics systems are implemented and used by clinicians to improve the quality and safety of patient centered care. Methods of how HIM Systems are used to exchange data between a variety of Healthcare organizations will be reviewed. Students will learn about Health Information Exchange (HIE), Population Health, disease mapping, analytics and healthcare trends.

HSC701 Leadership Theory in Healthcare 3

The purpose of this course is to explore leadership theories in the context of the changing healthcare environment. The student will develop a theoretical position regarding how to be an effective leader in a variety of healthcare and organizational settings.

HSC703 Applied Statistics for Health Sciences 3

This course covers the selection, application, and interpretation of basic statistical tests and procedures applicable to healthcare research topics. Topics include data, variables, hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, correlations, t test, Fischer’s F test, and the one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).

HSC705 Transformational Leadership in Complex Healthcare Organizations 3

This course is designed to aid individuals in becoming transformational leaders. It serves as a comprehensive resource in developing the foundational, conceptual, interpersonal, and practical disposition essential to inculcate transformation leadership skills and abilities.

HSC707 Policy Leadership for Healthcare Transformation 3

The purpose of this course is to explore leadership theories in the context of the changing healthcare environment. The student will develop a theoretical position regarding how to be an effective leader in a variety of healthcare and organizational settings.

HSC713 Quantitative Research Methods 3

This course is designed to introduce students to quantitative research methods. Students will develop the skills necessary to formulate appropriate quantitative research questions, collect quantitative data, select appropriate statistical analyses, and analyze quantitative data.

HSC715 Qualitative Research Methods 3

This course is designed to introduce students to qualitative research methods. Students will develop the skills necessary to formulate appropriate qualitative research questions, collect qualitative data, and analyze qualitative data.

HSC790 Research Project 1 3

This course will review proposal components, with particular emphasis on research design and developing the literature review, and will also focus on key issues such as research project format standards, time management demands, committee formation, IRB training, and project management. Students must submit their IRB proposal for institutional approval.

HSC793 Research Project 2 3

Doctoral students will be guided and assisted in the completion of research data collection, data analysis, conclusions, recommendations, and preparations for final methodology review.

HSC797 Research Project 3 3

A continuation of DHS 793, doctoral students will be guided in the completion of edits required by the research project committee and methodology review, and preparation for the project defense.

INF656 Cybersecurity 3

This course defines security and risk management principles using the context of a wireless network computer environment. Students will have the opportunity through case studies and guest speakers to investigate more fully issues such as how security threats are handled for computer operating systems and network environments by considering security regulations, cryptography, and business practices for electronic commerce.

PHE510 Cultural Competency in Healthcare 3

This course will examine both analytical and practical approaches to cultural competency in public health. Concepts, models, frameworks, and communication that occur in cross-cultural health situations will be discussed, but also the application of these concepts in real interventions and programs.

PHE517 Health Behavior Theory and Practice for Public Health 3

Students will explore the history and current applications of social and behavioral sciences as they are applied to public health practice and research. The course analyzes social and behavioral science models, theories, and approaches that inform public health and their philosophical roots. The course also examines social and behavioral determinants of health equity across the ecological spectrum.
