Reflecting on the Verdict in the Derek Chauvin Trial

April 20, 2021

Dear Bay Path Community,

Today’s verdict of guilty on all three counts against Derek Chauvin is a step toward addressing systemic racism in our country. It is important to recognize this moment in our history; it matters deeply to us.

While the verdict is a declaration against injustice and inequality, it does not eradicate the pain, heartache, fear, and anguish that continue to be experienced by Black and Brown communities on a daily basis. Nor does it correct past wrongs. We cannot forget the humanity of George Floyd, and the tragic reality that his children no longer have a father.

The work—our work—to advance social justice is profound and it must continue. As a Bay Path community we must commit to being part of the healing process and to playing an active role in fostering justice, peace, and hope.

Let us remain connected to what is right and find ways to move forward in positivity. I ask that you share your thoughts with me on how we can come together to reflect, discuss, and move forward together with greater understanding.

Sincerely,

Sandra J. Doran, JD
