Madison's Story

Madison Harakles is a senior from Maine. She majored in general psychology and minored in performing arts. She can be seen on stage in many campus theatre productions. Madison has many leadership roles on campus, including president of the Student Government Association (SGA), Gay Path Alliance Club, and the Environmental Club. She also works as a writing tutor for other students. When Madison is not busy, you can find her reading, practicing yoga, and singing. Her favorite book currently is The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

“My personal hero is my mom. She was a stay-at-home mom. After going through a divorce, the weight of supporting three children fell on her shoulders. She chose to go back to school to pursue a degree in early childhood education. By working hard, she was able to start her own pre-school. Now she is the owner of two facilities. She has taught me never to underestimate myself, no matter how dire the situation may be. The only thing that will hold you back is yourself.

“The reason I chose Bay Path was because it is a small, all-women’s university. In high school, I didn’t feel comfortable coming out with my identity because I didn’t want to feel like I was the only one. Bay Path has created a very safe and inclusive space for people in the LGBTQIA+ group. I feel secure enough to show the world who I really am. It has also inspired me to run for the president of the Gay Path Alliance club to offer support for other students who are going through a similar experience. I want to validate everyone’s identity and empower him or her in any way I can.

“At Bay Path, I have also been encouraged to take on more leadership roles. By joining clubs, I am able to share my passion with other students. Being the president of the SGA and a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Student Subcommittee has empowered me to advocate for others and myself. I have learned many skills and some new personality traits along the way. I have discovered that if I have decided to do something, then I will have to put in all my effort and go all the way. After graduation, my plan is to find a job or a volunteer position in social work. I also look forward to applying to PhD programs in mental health counseling.”
