LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Daniel Webster College freshman Sam Langlois (Raymond, N.H.) tossed a complete-game two hitter and a complete-game five-hitter to lead the visiting Eagles to a doubleheader sweep of New England Collegiate Conference rival Bay Path College earlier today. Daniel Webster (17-14-1 overall, 10-5-1 NECC) won the opening game 4-1 and posted a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.
Bay Path honored its two “Sarah’s” in their final home contests with the final send-off for Sarah Palmer (Topsham, Maine) and Sarah Wright (Canterbury, N.H.).
In the opening game, Langlois struck out 12 batters and held Pay Path (17-18, 9-7) to just one run on two hits and two walks in seven innings of work. She closed out the twinbill sweep with seven strikeouts in seven innings in the nightcap, limiting the Wildcats to one run on five hits and three bases on balls. With the wins, Langlois improved to 12-7 on the season.
Game one saw Daniel Webster strike first, as Amy Waller (Berlin, Mass.) led off the game with a triple, and came around to score on a passed ball.
Bay Path knotted the contest at 1-1, as Wright opened the fourth inning with a double, and scored following back-to-back sacrifice bunts and an error.
The Eagles snapped the deadlock for good in the fifth inning, parlaying a pair of Bay Path errors into three unearned runs that closed out the scoring at 4-1.
The Wildcats’ fielding woes carried over into the second game, as three first-inning errors contributed to four Daniel Webster runs. An RBI-single by Lauren Chesnulevich (Hudson, N.H.), a two-run single by Theresa DiSantis (Hinsdale, Mass.) and a run-scoring triple by Kristina Rieger (Concord, N.H.) caused the damage.
DWC ran its lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning, as consecutive singles by April Molina (Fairfield, Conn.), DiSantis and Rieger turned into an insurance run.
Bay Path got on the board in the bottom half of the frame, thanks to a RBI-double by Sarah Gates(Crown Point, Ind.) that knocked in Kellie Lastowski (Turners Falls, Mass.).
On the afternoon, Molina and Rieger picked up three hits apiece, while four other players – Waller, Amanda Varrichio (Middletown, Conn.), Chesnulevich and DeSantis – chipped in two hits each for Daniel Webster.
Gates led the Bay Path attack with three hits on the day. Both Gates and Nizinski collected two hits in the second game.
Kristal Cormier(Rochester, N.H.) went the distance in the first game, allowing just one earned run on six hits in seven innings of work. Cormier (8-9) walked two and struck out two.
Jess Nizinski(West Springfield, Mass.) pitched a complete game in the nightcap, scattering four earned runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work. Nizinski (9-9) struck out one and walked one.
