Step Team Finds Success on Stage

03.14.2008

The Bay Path College step dance team, known as the Essence Step Squad, took home third place at a recent competition at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts. Competing against other college teams in the Boston area, Essence also won a medal for best exit off the stage.

The team, which practices seven days a week, has been busy all year traveling to schools in the Boston area to perform and compete. In April, they travel to SUNY Albany, their first time venturing to New York State for a performance.

Jewel Cadet ’09, co-captain of the Essence Step Squad, says that the team loves being Bay Path ambassadors to other campuses. “We get to know students from other campuses, and tell them all about Bay Path. We’re excited to go to Albany in April – it’s a big school, and we love seeing other performances, too!”

In addition to Jewel, the other students who traveled to Merrimack include co-captain Ashley Whitehead ’09, Latasha Baker ’12, Karie Asencio ’11, and Zakiya Hopkins ’11. “We’re proud of what we’ve done all year long. Most of the other teams have coaches, but we do all our own choreography and song selection.”

On March 26 and March 28, the team will be repeating their winning performance at Bay Path for students and the College community to enjoy. Stay tuned for details on these upcoming performances!
