Bay Path Falls to Elms in Senior Day Softball Action

Despite falling to local North Atlantic Conference softball rivals Elms College, sophomore shortstop Sara Gates (North Granby, Conn.) was the only Wildcat to hit safely in both games. The Blazers of Elms shut down Bay Path taking game one 11-to-0 in five innings and came back to take the night cap 8-to-0 in six innings. 

Elms’ senior hurler Tammie Tremblay (Springfield, Mass.) topped all players both at the plate and in the circle. She finished the day batting .833 going 5-for-6 with one triple and chipping in an RBI. Tremblay (9-10) was awarded the shut-out in game won. She gave up four hits while fanning three and walking one. Tremblay started the nightcap going 2.0 innings allowing two hits and one walk. 

Gates led the Wildcats hitting .667 going 4-for-6 with 2 doubles. Four other Wildcats managed to hit safely for the day. 

In game one, Tremblay was a perfect 4-for-4 notching one hit and one RBI. Teammate and fellow honored senior short stop Karyn Palomba (Enfield, Conn.) was the driving force of the five inning victory. Palomba was also perfect from the plate finishing  3-for-3 with five RBI. 

Sophomore infielder Allyson Gruffum (Ipswich, Mass.) and freshman outfielder Allison McBride (East Providence, RI) each pitched in two hits with Gruffum shellacking her first triple on the year. 

Sophomore pitcher Kristal Cormier (Rochester, NH) suffered the loss giving up 11 runs on 16 hits in which only six runs were earned. Cormier (8-7) walked three and struck out one Blazer. Cormier and honored senior catcher Amanda Rodriguez (South Hadley, Mass.) each tallied Bay Path’s other two hits for the opener. 

McBride and sophomore outfielder Kim Lastowski (Turner Falls, Mass.) combined to lead the Blazers in the night cap. The both tallied two hits on three at bats, while Lastowski added two hits and two RBI. Honored senior infielder Christina Giampetruzzi (Westfield, Mass.) also pitched in two hits and an RBI. 

Blazers pitching staff effectively shut-down Bay Path in six innings with each pitcher going 2.0 innings for final game. Freshman reliever Andrea Ramsdell (Gardner, Mass.) picked up the win improving to 7-3 on the season. She gave up only one hit with two walks and one strike out. Fellow freshman Destinee Meeker (Bantam, Conn.) closed the game allowing only one hit while placing one batter on-base. 

Besides Gates going 2-for-3 in the night cap for Bay Path, junior Sarah Wright (Canterbury, NH) and freshman Kat Begin (Weare, NH) each hit safely for the Wildcats. 

Sophomore hurler Jess Nizinski (West Springfield, Mass.) suffered the loss gave up 12 hits on eight runs only five of which were earned. Nizinski (11-8) walked one. 

Bay Path honored six senior student-athletes in between their two final regular season games. Elms’ seniors Palomba, Giampetruzzi and Tremblay were given flowers in their recognition of their senior season of play. Bay Path’s senior members’ Rodriguez, Tianna Carr (Beverly, Mass.) and Kristin Dzuiba (Springfield, Mass.) were sent off in style commemorating their four years of donning the maroon and white with flowers, balloons and sport-photo collages. 

Elms advances to 16-13 on the year and 9-7 in the NAC, while Bay Path finishes their regular season with a 19-15 overall and 9-11 in conference play. Bay Path, having already garnered al post-season spot in the NAC Softball Tournament, will be on the road next Tuesday, April 29 facing a yet to be determined conference opponent.
