What are the psychological and public health impacts of surfing?

In this webinar, Dr. Tara Rava Zolnikov explored how surfing can influence mental health, child and adolescent development, and public health outcomes.

Drawing on emerging research in a previously under-studied area, Dr. Zolnikov discussed how surfing intersects with:

  • Sport psychology
  • General psychology
  • Child and adolescent psychology
  • Public health
  • Treatment and intervention strategies

The webinar examined how participation in surfing may support mental well-being, resilience, and therapeutic outcomes, while also highlighting opportunities for future research in this growing field.

This webinar offered valuable insights for professionals and students interested in psychology, public health, occupational therapy, recreation therapy, and sport-based interventions.

Through a panel discussion, participants deepened their understanding of the mental, physical, and emotional well-being needs of birthing people and their partners during the postpartum period (up to one year). The panel examined the often-overlooked realities of the postpartum period through the lens of perinatal care professionals who work directly with families in the first critical weeks after childbirth. Centering both patient and partner experiences, the panel sparked dialogue among healthcare providers about how to close gaps in postpartum care and build more resilient and collaborative systems of support.
