This Skills-Based Health/Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - Physical Education Certificate provides graduate coursework based on SHAPE America's Grade Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education and the CASEL Social Emotional Competencies for educators to enhance their knowledge of physical education content and pedagogical skills. Students with a Massachusetts initial license in Physical Education may submit the credits earned in this program when applying for or renewing their Massachusetts professional license.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) focuses on helping students to integrate skills, attitudes and behaviors that contribute to overall personal well-being. This includes self-awareness, self-management (such as goal setting and impulse control), social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making.

Skills taught in the Skills-Based Health/Social Emotional Learning (SEL) - Physical Education Certificate curriculum greatly benefit children’s success in school, career and life. For example, kindergarteners with stronger social and emotional skills are more likely to graduate from high school and college and have stable, full-time employment. They are also less likely to commit crimes or have drug, alcohol and mental health problems.*

Health/Social Emotional Learning - Physical Education Certificate Program Highlights
