Sandra Burns, MA
Professor Emeritus Sandra Burns, M.A., has led the Residential and Commercial Interior Design program for more than 40 years, establishing it as a respected and innovative pathway into the design profession. Widely recognized throughout the design community, she has built an extensive network of industry connections and is known for her expertise, mentorship, and commitment to student success.
As Coordinator of the Residential and Commercial Interior Design program, Professor Burns develops and continually refines a curriculum that combines problem-solving, critical thinking, analysis, material selection, color theory, textiles, lighting, style, computer-aided drafting, presentation techniques, and professional business practices. As a major within the Business Department, the program integrates creative design principles with the practical and entrepreneurial skills necessary for success in the field. Coursework is carefully scaffolded to build technical proficiency and professional confidence, while projects reflect real-world design challenges and often involve actual clients and community partners.
Throughout her tenure, Professor Burns has created a rich learning environment supported by an extensive collection of design samples, visual aids, slides, books, magazines, and material resources that enhance classroom instruction and deepen students’ understanding of design concepts. She remains committed to keeping the curriculum aligned with emerging trends in interior design, technology, materials, and presentation methods.
Beyond the classroom, Professor Burns provides students with exceptional experiential learning opportunities. Under her leadership, students participate in numerous Decorator Show Houses, Artistic Tabletops exhibitions at local museums, and community-based design initiatives. Student projects include the design and renovation of a historic home listed on the Historic Registry, now open to the public and available for special events; the development of educational lectures on American design for a local Historical Commission; and the design of a showroom for a local bakery.
Professor Burns organizes field trips, invites industry professionals as guest speakers, publishes newsletters, develops internship opportunities, and has established an advisory board composed of design professionals to strengthen connections between students and the industry. As co-founder and co-leader of the Interior Design Club, she continues to create countless opportunities for students to engage with professionals, expand their creative endeavors, and explore entrepreneurial aspirations.
She also co-created the Interior Design Award through the Doreen Spencer Fund, a yearly honor recognizing and supporting outstanding student achievement. Through her visionary leadership, dedication to excellence, and passion for design education, Professor Burns has helped generations of students become skilled professionals and has left a lasting impact on both the program and the broader design community.
