Dr. Shotwell has worked in many areas of OT practice including: The US Army (Mental health, Neuro Rehab, and Orthopedic Rehab), Mental Health (inpatient/day treatment), Inpatient Acute Care and Rehabilitation, Outpatient Neuro and Hand Therapy, Work Hardening, K-12 Public School System, Vocational Programs for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities, Private Practice Pediatrics, Home Health, Long-term Care and more recently, as a private health coach. Dr. Shotwell has held faculty positions and served in various leadership roles at multiple universities. She has worked in entry-level OT programs and in three different post-professional OTD programs, as well as being a faculty member in a PhD in Health Sciences Program. Dr. Shotwell has taught numerous clinical and research courses and loves mentoring students in their scholarly projects.

Dr. Shotwell has served her state and national OT associations as state association president, the AOTA leadership group for state association presidents, the AOTA political action committee, the Accreditation Council for OT Education (ACOTE) roster of accreditors, the AOTA program directors mentor program, and also served on the research committee for a professional association related to driver rehabilitation. She has also served on a state licensing board. In her local community, Dr. Shotwell serves veterans and their families through local civic groups.

Dr. Shotwell has authored 40+ book chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles. She has delivered 100+ peer-reviewed presentations to state and national associations. She serves as a manuscript reviewer for four journals, including: Occupational Therapy Journal of Research, the Open Journal of Occupational Therapy, Disabilities, and Health Services.
