Bay Path’s Dr. Jody Goodman Shares Advice for Parents of College Students on Western Mass News Parenting Playbook

Bay Path University Dean of Students and Engagement Dr. Jody Goodman recently joined Western Mass News' Parenting Playbook podcast to share advice for parents navigating an important transition: how to support their college students while giving them the independence to grow.

During the episode, “College Independence: Taking the Next Step,” Dr. Goodman offered practical guidance on topics ranging from making friends and managing finances to navigating health insurance and medical care. Throughout the conversation, she encouraged parents to remain a source of support while allowing their students to take greater ownership of their college experience and their lives.

“Your role is now, ‘I'm sending you off, and I'm walking alongside you. I'm allowing you to take the lead, right? You're the one driving the bus now, but I'm in the passenger seat. I'm right here if you need me,’” said Dr. Goodman.

Her advice highlights the important balance parents and families can strike during the college years: staying connected and available while giving students the space to develop confidence, independence, and the skills to navigate challenges on their own.
