Originally from Southern California, Professor McKell graduated with honors from the University of California Santa Barbara. He completed a 25+ year healthcare management career and began teaching at the University level in 2016. As a result of his experience and graduate studies, Professor McKell brings significant strategic, operational, and performance improvement knowledge to healthcare organizations. He managed the development of several successful medical and surgical business lines, separate revenue services, and in cooperation with hospital programs, including several 50/50 joint ventures. He was the managing partner of a physician consulting firm for ten years and has been the Chief Executive Officer of four physician-owned practices of 50 to 100+ physicians over the past 12 years. 

He maintains an active consulting practice in chronic disease pharmacoeconomics and served five years as the strategy leader for the Continuing  Care Health Collaborative, a national shared decision-making organization composed of several high-cost chronic diseases patient advocacy organizations (MS, Hemophilia, Diabetes, Crohn’s and Colitis), Pharmaceutical manufactures, and significant insurance organizations (Aetna, Blue Cross, United). His research interests include the following: Pharmacoeconomics, Value-Based Chronic Disease Outcomes, Organization and System Quality Improvement, Medical Decision-making and Diagnostic Errors, Behavioral Economics, Cognitive and Social Psychology, Implementation Science, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Health, and Health Professions Education.

Professor McKell serves as the AI Community of Growth leader for the International Association of Medical Science Educators (IAMSE) and serves on their Webinar Audio Series and Professional Development Committees. He is a peer reviewer for Medical Science Educator and AAMAC Medbiquious articles and an abstract reviewer for the annual meetings of IAMSE, Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM), and Society for Medical Decision Making(SMDM).

Professor McKell lives in Springfield, Massachusetts. His outside interests include competing in multiple long-distance English Channel rules swimming events, including the Maui Channel swim (9+ miles) and the Boston Light(house) to Boston Harbor 3 times (8 miles). He was the captain of a four-person relay team selected as one of 20 relay teams for the 2012 Swim Round Manhattan (28.5 miles) and qualified for a relay swim of the English Channel in 2013. He has completed 10 Alcatraz swims, all non-wetsuit. He is also known for making - and sharing - a wide variety of homemade desserts and baked goods.
