An Important Message from President Carol A. Leary
January 31, 2019
On October 1, 2018, I wrote to the Bay Path community regarding an incident that had taken place on our campus during a school-sanctioned student event that included students from other campuses and that necessitated the involvement of Bay Path public safety and local law enforcement.
In my email, I indicated that the University would engage an independent and external investigator to conduct a thorough review of the incident. Pending the results of the investigation, the public safety officer involved was put on administrative leave.
The independent investigation by DeMoura Smith LLP has been completed. Their findings are that the officer’s actions did not constitute a criminal act nor did his handling of the situation violate any person's civil liberties. These findings corroborate those of the Longmeadow Police department which also investigated the incident.
Accordingly, the officer will return to campus public safety at Bay Path as of February 4, 2019.
As I also noted in my email of last fall, our community's most important values are respect and dignity. I again call on all of us at Bay Path to honor these values.

On Saturday evening one of our school-sanctioned student groups held a fundraising event in Blake Dining Hall. The event was intended to provide our students and students from other campuses with an opportunity to socialize, have fun, and learn more about the sponsoring organization.
Unfortunately, the behavior of a small number of individuals in attendance necessitated the involvement of Bay Path public safety and local law enforcement which resulted in the closing down of the event.
As is always the case, the safety and well-being of our students and community is our top concern. We will be engaging an independent and external investigator to conduct a thorough review of the incident. The public safety officer involved in the incident is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
In my meetings with staff, faculty, and students, I always try to reinforce what I consider to be our community’s most important values: respect and dignity. Especially at times like these, I call on all of us at Bay Path to honor these values. Thank you.
Carol A. Leary
