Elizabeth Peavey had some interesting life lessons to communicate to Bay Path undergraduate classes this past week.

Reflecting on her own first foray into teaching at the college level years ago, she said, “I had to ask myself, how do I teach? I knew how to boss people around, but a syllabus? A curriculum? How do I teach? How do I teach?!”

Well the answer to her question happened to be, as it turns out, quite naturally.

“That entire summer I spent getting an education myself in how I wanted to do this,” she remembered. “At that point, I realized it was my calling. I do not feel any more at home anywhere on earth—behind the wheel of a car, in my jammies, in my marriage—nowhere more comfortable than in front of a classroom.”

“Everything that I care about, everything that I was trained to do, it all just comes together there,” she added.

Staying for the week here at Bay Path leading up to her Saturday, February 15 one-woman performance of “My Mother’s Clothes are Not My Mother,” Peavey sat in on some classes to impart the life lessons of what brought her to this professional epiphany.

She likes to joke that she has “never held down a real job,” but that is due to the fact that her work is inextricably linked to her identity. Her writing, from the heart, examines the places she’s been and how that has shaped who she is.

Having just wrapped up a lecture in one of Professor Brenda Hardin Abbott’s English classes, Peavey said, “These young women here are driven. They know what they want to be, who they want to be, and they’re going after it.”

“I’m still reinventing myself everyday!” she joked.
