So You Want to Go to College

Tiana at Bay Path CollegeSelecting the right college is one of the most important decisions you will make.

The first step in the college search begins with you.

Why do you want to go to college?

You need to go to college because you want to go, not because your friends are going, or your teachers and parents are telling you that’s what you have to do. It’s important you know this answer, because this can help you start planning your future.

Where would you like to go to college?

When you’re deciding there are many factors to keep in mind: size, majors, special academic programs, campus community, student body, living arrangements, and distance from home. These factors make up your college experience and can determine if the college you choose “is the right fit.”

How will you pay for college?

Once you know you want to go to college, you need to be realistic about the costs. Saving money is important, but you need to do some research: find out what kind of financial aid is available. Your community or school may have scholarships you can apply to for aid. And colleges have financial aid advisors that can give you information about grants, scholarships (most colleges have a number of scholarships they award!), and loans.

What are the requirements for going to college?

Once you know you want to go to college, you need to know what are the admissions requirements for the schools you are interested in (every school has different admissions requirements). Make a checklist and contact an admissions counselor as soon as possible.
