Joanne Murphy
"Whether being bold is a learned or innate characteristic, I do believe that life experiences cultivate bold outcomes—or not. Being the oldest and only female child in our house, I was all too aware that being female meant that my education was not as important as that of my brothers. Fortunately I had the fortitude and ambition to change that stereotype for myself. Albeit, acceptance at my first choice small female college was not approved, and I was given the choice to attend a state university or none at all. I reluctantly chose the university, however in my heart that would never be satisfactory. I continuously pursued my dream to continue my education, circumventing many other challenges, by enrolling in random courses at Smith College and Mt. Holyoke College, while working at both in their Advancement departments. This is where I first experienced the benefits of a small female college education. I knew this instinctively when I was just a teenager. At the time, neither college offered a master's degree in any aspect of philanthropy studies, so I kept looking. This degree would need to be in an educational environment that would be more nurturing than a large university—not merely for my educational goals, but my personal needs as well. Bay Path College’s 2008 introduction of a degree in Strategic Fundraising and Philanthropy was my dream come true, and right in my back yard! Finally, after more than 18 years of looking and anticipating, I could see everything come together after so many disappointments, obstacles and thwarted attempts. Bay Path cultivated my Bold pursuits while educating and supporting the whole of me. As I look back, I see clearly that I always had the potential to be Bold—however, it took other Bold women to bring my Bold potential out and to help me see it too! I look forward to paying Bold forward. Every woman deserves to feel and live it!"
