Brittany Castagna , ’ 12 Biotechnology

When Brittany Castagna ’12 is asked how she spent her summer vacation, the answer is probably not what you would expect: studying the impact of parasitic amoebas in humans, and their implications on human health. A biotechnology major, Brittany has a natural curiosity for the sciences that doesn’t stop when she leaves the classroom. That’s why she has been recognized with the 2011 Biomedical Scholar Award, given to a student who shows an aptitude for biomedical science and has the potential to seek advanced degrees. The honor is significant for Brittany, and the cash award that accompanies the award will certainly come in handy. This summer, she’ll be participating in the MIT Summer Internship program and living in the metro Boston area where she’ll be working in a state-of-the-art science. Quite a step for a small-town girl that dares to dream big!
