Advocacy & Fine Arts Photography in the Digital Age

LONGMEADOW, Mass.—On Thursday, September 17, Bay Path College will host
Advocacy and Fine Arts Photography in the Digital Age, an evening program focusing on authenticity and ethics of digital versus film photography when used to promote environmental causes.
Sponsored by Kaleidoscope: Perspectives on Culture, Life and Learning, the event is free and open to the public, and will be held at 7 p.m. in Breck Suite, Wright Hall on the Longmeadow Campus, 588 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow, MA.
David Griffin of David Griffin Photography will discuss how photographers who work to promote environmental or other causes walk a fine line between what is a “real” photograph and what is essentially a constructed image. His presentation will clarify the popular misconception that digital photography is “less authentic” than film photography. Griffin will explore various aspects from the physiology of the eye to the ethics of nature photography. He will also demonstrate some of the processing steps that go into producing images, discuss where he “draws the line,” and review what practices exist in the photographic profession. The program contains a number of photographs taken across the United States.
Griffin is a storyteller, who uses images, video, sound and words to connect viewers with the land, water and animals that surround them and enrich their lives. He uses his photography to promote conservation of land and water resources and is affiliated with numerous regional and national environmental and historical organizations. He currently resides in Maynard with his wife, Betsy.
