Nighthawks Soar Past Wildcats

Despite outscoring Newbury College in the second half, Bay Path College was unable to comeback from an 11 point deficit from their first 20 minutes of New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action falling 63-56. The Wildcats of Bay Path surged in the final 10 minutes of play coming back from 18 points down to within two treys with under two minutes of play falling short of clipping the Nighthawks wings.
Two Nighthawks led all scorers tallying 21 points each. Sophomore starting guard Ashley Monteiro of Cambridge, MA, lit up the arc hammering down seven treys. Monteiro went 7-for-11 from downtown finishing with an incredible 58 percent from the arc. Fellow starting guard and freshman Morganna Machado of Attleboro, MA, also tallied 21 points going 8-for-17 from the field and 3-for-9 from the three-point range. Machado was also the only Nighthawk to make a bucket from the line going 2-for-2. She added six boards and six assists for the night.
Bay Path Wildcats junior forward Jessica Hunt of Madison, CT, was the only player to notch a double-double finishing with 19 points and 14 boards. Hunt shot 62 percent from the floor while chipping in four blocks, three steals and one assist.
Offensively, Bay Path saw some hoop action spread out amongst the team tonight with two other Wildcats scoring in the double figures. Junior forward Ashley Cimmino of Westfield, MA, put up 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds. Senior guard Sarah Wright of Canterbury, NH, added 10 points hitting 2-for-4 from downtown. Wright chipped in four boards and four assists.
Junior starting point guard Christina Calabrese of Hamilton, NJ, also participated in the scoring push with five points, while dishing out the game high in assists with eight. Under the boards she nabbed six defensive rebounds. For the first time this semester, Bay Path’s bench contributed to the scoreboard. Newcomer sophomore guard Jessica Toner of South Windsor, CT, pulled off some big shots down the stretch. Toner finished with five points while igniting a final push to bring the game to within six points from an 18 point hole.
Newbury took advantage of their fast-break chances nailing eight points off of 15 Bay Path turnovers. Bay Path outscored Newbury on second chance buckets for the evening hitting nine off of offensive boards. Newbury was a three-point threat all night finishing at 31 percent after shellacking a 54 percent from down town in the first half.
Newbury is now 3-16 on their 2008-2009 campaign and 3-7 in the NECC, while Bay Path falls to 3-16 overall and 1-9 in conference play.
