Bay Path’s Goodwill

You may have noticed the large blue collection bins sitting in the entrance way of Blake Hall for the past couple of weeks. They were there as part of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC)’s first-annual campus wide Goodwill drive. Nick Chapman, Asst. Director of Athletics here at Bay Path, says the SAAC students began advertising the Goodwill donation drive right after Thanksgiving, thinking it would last a couple of weeks. But so many people brought in donations, they decided to extend the collections through finals week. “We requested that people mainly bring winter clothing or blankets,” Chapman says. “With the recent storms and tornados people are really struggling this season.” Many families experienced major damage during 2011 storms, which ruined their winter clothing and gear.
Dajara Right, a senior majoring in General Psychology, is one of two Bay Path SAAC presidents. Right says the committee was happy to pull together a campus wide effort that helps people in need. “I know a lot of people who don’t have much. Winter is so harsh and times are tough right now, so it feels good to help even a little.”
Bay Path’s SAAC team is made up of 14 athletes, with two representatives from each Wildcat sport making up the total committee. A SAAC presence on campus is required as part of Bay Path’s NCAA membership. According to its web site, the goal of the national SAAC program is to, “enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image.” The first-annual Goodwill donation drive has been an excellent example of how SAAC benefits the Bay Path community. Chapman says SAAC has given “a lot of these young women great leadership opportunities.” After their Goodwill drive, it has also given many local families some warm clothing this season.
