This year's Commencement Speaker is Billy Starr, founder and executive director of the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge. Billy Starr founded the Pan-Mass Challenge in 1980 with a goal of raising money to combat cancer, a disease that had claimed his mother at a young age, his uncle and a cousin. Since then, the Pan-Mass Challenge has raised over $204 million of life-saving cancer research nd treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its ride form Sturbridge to Provincetown, Massachusetts. In 2007, the Pan-Mass Challenge contributed $33 million to the Jimmy Fund, representing over 50 percent of the charity's annual donations. Participants in the Pan-Mass Challenge come form 30 states and six countries to be part of something greater than themselves. "The Pan-Mass Challenge has made what we do at Dana-Farber possible", said Dana-Farber President Edward J. Benz, Jr., M.D. "When they write the history of how cancer was conquered, the Pan-Mass Challenge will be in chapter one." A graduate of the University of Denver, Mr. Starr earned a master's degree in education from Northeastern University in 1978.
