Shelly Lazarus,
Luncheon Keynote Speaker
Chairman & Chief Executive Officer
Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide
Shelly Lazarus has been working “in the business I love,” for more than three decades, almost all of that time at Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide. She rose through the ranks and her success within the organization led her to become CEO in 1996 and Chairman in 1997. Working in both advertising and direct marketing cemented Shelly’s belief that building brands requires an integrated communications approach driven by a big core idea. These principles, called 360 Degree Brand Stewardship®, have guided successful campaigns for such notable companies as IBM, Kodak, American Express, and most recently, to Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty. The Campaign began as an idea based on creating a dialogue with women about how they define beauty. Using nontraditional advertising methods and creative ways of communicating, the Campaign quickly emerged as a breakthrough marketing effort that is known for promoting brand awareness and its adherence to authenticity.
Shelly Lazarus serves on the boards of several corporate, philanthropic, and academic institutions including General Electric, American Museum of Natural History, Merck, and the World Wildlife Fund. Shelly has also been a frequent industry honoree. The Advertising Women of New York selected her as Woman of the Year in 1994; she has appeared in Fortune magazine’s annual ranking of America’s 50 Most Powerful Women in Business since the list’s inception in 1998; and she was also the first woman to receive the Columbia Business School Distinguished Leadership in Business Award. She is a member of Advertising Women of New York, The Committee of 200, Council on Foreign Relations, The Business Council, and the Deloitte & Touche Council for the Advancement of Women.
