Bay Path Shuts Out Southern Vermont in Softball Action

04.18.2008

Bay Path’s sophomore pitching duo co-captain Kristal Cormier (Rochester , NH) and local lefty Jess Nizinski (West Springfield, Mass.) combined for two shut-outs on the day allowing only three total hits. Cormier led the maroon and white sluggers to a 9-to-0 win while Nizinski powered the team to a 14-to-0 victory in the nightcap. The Wildcats managed to tally 23 runs on 21 hits in their sweep of Southern Vermont College in today’s double header at the Farmlea Rd. Field.

Hometown senior outfielder Kristin Dzuiba (Springfield, Mass.) topped her team in game one going 2-for-3 with one run scored. Six other members hit safely, while eight out of the nine scored. Fellow senior catcher Amanda Rodriguez (South Hadley, Mass.) tallied two RBI as well as two runs against the Southern Vermont Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers’ freshman outfielder Patricia Marquardt (Abington, Mass.) broke up Cormier’s no-hitter with the lone hit for Southern Vermont.

Cormier (8-4) tallied her third shut-out on the year with her near perfect performance. She allowed only one hit while walking two and fanning eight for the day. Sophomore hurler Micaela Quinn (Watervliet, NY) suffered the loss giving up eight hits on nine runs. Quinn (0-11) struck out two and placed five on base.

Senior infielder Sarah Palmer (Topsham, Maine) dominated the nightcap finishing 4-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Junior catcher Sarah Wright (Canterbury, NH) added three hits and three runs while sophomore shortstop Sarah Gates (North Granby, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with two runs. Senior outfielder Tianna Carr (Beverly, Mass.), junior infielder Sam Gunseth (Swanzey, NH) and Cormier each combined for six RBI, two apiece.

Southern Vermont’s freshman Tiarra Hall (Washington, DC) and Quinn hit safely in the nightcap. Hall’s speed combined with a nicely placed bunt along with Quinn’s shot to center field proved to be the closest the Mountaineers came in the top of the third to scoring.

Nizinski (11-5) picked up her fourth shut-out this season. She allowed two hits, two walks and fanned four for the game. Quinn (0-12) despite only lasting the part of the first inning was the losing pitcher of record. She gave up eleven runs on five hits placing six on base. Freshman reliever Mariann Mangiapane (Barnet, VT) hurled four effective innings giving up only three runs on eight hits. She struck-out three Wildcats.

Bay Path is now 19-9 on the season while Southern Vermont falls to 0-16 overall. The Wildcats host a North Atlantic Conference weekend facing Maine Farmington tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. and Thomas on Sunday at a 3:00 p.m. start time.
