SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (September 2, 2008) – Senior outside hitter Chelsea Tracy (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/Antilles) collected a match-best eight kills to propel the Mount Holyoke College women’s volleyball team to 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-19) triumph over Bay Path College this evening at the Mildred Howard Gymnasium. It was the season opener for both squads and the first ever meeting between the two programs. First year head coach Sonnie Terrell picked up her first career victory for the Lyons.
Mount Holyoke received a boost from senior right side hitter Amanda Trask (Brockton, Mass./Brockton), who contributed five kills along with match-highs of 12 digs and three service aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Rosa Marruffo (Tulsa, Okla./Bishop Kelly) tallied six kills and five digs, while senior libero Kathryne Schwartz (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) added six digs. Rounding things out for the hosts was sophomore setter Kateryna Kuc (New Haven, Conn./Hopkins), who dished out 17 assists.
Junior setter Ashley Cimmino (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) paced Bay Path with seven kills. Sophomore libero Davi Chuong (Easthampton, Mass./Easthampton) recorded four digs, while junior defensive specialist Stephany Bushey (Chicopee, Mass./Holyoke Community College) chipped in with 11 assists.
Mount Holyoke (1-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Saturday, when it travels to Simmons College for a non-conference contest beginning at 7:00 p.m. Bay Path (0-1, 0-0 NECC) is scheduled to visit the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Thursday. It will be the Wildcats second of five straight road matches to open the year.
