Wildcats Shut Down MCLA in Tennis Home Opener

LONGMEADOW, Mass.—The Bay Path College Wildcats opened up their home women’s tennis schedule with a bang shutting down the Trailblazers of MCLA 9-0 today. The Wildcats were led by senior captain Raquel Babeu (North Adams, Mass.), 2007 NAC Player of the Year, at the number one singles while fellow junior co-captain Julia Bendzin (Poestenkill, NY) won at the number three spot. 

In singles action, Babeau defeated Melanie Katcher 6-2, 6-1.  Sophomore teammate Lauren Hangasky (Ludlow, Mass.) came back in the second and third set to beat Jennifer Paskowski of MCLA 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second singles position. Bendzin, in the three spot, easily shut down her opponent Katie Bodnar 6-0, 6-0. In the number four spot freshman Sara Costa (Tiverton, RI) went a lengthy bout taking her first collegiate singles match 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. 

The match of the day came from junior Kara Fox (Biddeford, Maine) who went two and half hours to overcome Sandra Sheridan 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. Fellow junior Cristina Ruiz easily won her number six singles match 6-3, 6-0 defeating Samantha Woodworth. 

Babeu and Hangasky teamed up at the number one doubles position to down their MCLA counterparts Bodnar and Katcher 8-2. In the number two spot tandem partners Bendzin and Carolina Ynguanzo (Springfield, Mass.) won 8-5 against the Trailblazers’ Carrie Richards and Paskowski. Costa and Ruiz again partnered up for a “knock-out” match 9-0 against MCLA tandem Woodworth and Jihan Leonard. 

Costa and Ruiz are now 2-0 in doubles action as they were the only team to win their earlier  doubles match against Nichols College. 

Bay Path is now 1-1 on the season while MCLA falls to 0-1. The Wildcats will be back in action on Wednesday, September 10th hosting Albertus Magnus College at 3:30 p.m.
