Wildcats down NECC rival

LONGMEADOW, Mass.—The Wildcats of Bay Path finish first round of conference play while increasing their nine game winning streak defeating the Mariners of Mitchell 6-3 in New England Collegiate Conference women’s tennis action today.  

Returning from injury,Bay Path’s #1 singles player senior Raquel Babeu (North Adams, Mass.) shut out Mitchell senior Jennifer Travella (Oracle, Ariz.) 6-0, 6-0. In the #2 singles action Mariners’ freshman Lauren Rowley (Seattle, Wash.) defeated sophomore Lauren Hangasky (Ludlow, Mass.). In the #3 and #4 spots junior, NECC Player of the Week, Julia Bendzin (Poestenkill, N.Y.) and freshman, NECC Rookie of the Week, Sarah Costa (Tiverton, R.I.) lived up to their honor both shutting down their opponents 6-0, 6-0. 

At the #5 and #6 singles action junior Wildcat teammates Kara Fox (Biddeford, Maine) and Cristina Ruiz (Waterbury, Conn.) won their matches 6-0, 6-2. 

After taking the match in singles action, Bay Path’s Head Coach Stephen Morneawas able to play his entire roster.

Mitchell won two more points winning both the #1 and #3 doubles action. Travella and Rowley partnered to a 8-4 victory defeating Bay Path’s junior Brittnea Frazer (Lanesborough, Mass.) and sophomore Carolina Ynguanzo (Springfield, Mass.). The Mariners’ also proved victorious in the #3 match when freshman Rebecca Ciccarone (Malverne, N.Y.) and sophomore Ilana Papernik (New York, N.Y.) defeated sophomore Mallory Wray (West Springfield, Mass.) and freshman Lianna Loveitt (Gorham, Maine) 8-2. 

The Wildcats took the #2 doubles action when tandem Fox and Bendzin easily won their match 8-1.

Bay Path is now 9-1 on the season and 3-0 in NECC action, while Mitchell falls to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. Bay Path will be on the road facing Clark on October 2nd at a 5:00 p.m. start time.
