Tennis Team Continues their Winning Streak

LONGMEADOW, Mass.--Bay Path College defeated former conference foe Johnson State 7-2 in NCAA Division III women’s tennis action today.

Due to some injuries on the Wildcat’s, Assistant Coach Jackie Sousa was able to play her entire roster allowing some freshman some court time.

Freshman Lianna Loveitt (Gorham, Maine) finished first at the #5 singles spot shutting-out her opponent freshman Orina Umansky (Salem, Mass.) 6-0, 6-0. Junior Kara Fox (Biddeford, Maine) was the next to grab a win for the Maroon and White net women upsetting sophomore Ziressa Hibbard (Georgia, Vt.) 6-0, 6-0. New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week Mallory Wray (West Springfield, Mass.) won her match 6-0, 6-2 downing freshman Zoe Yioulos (Danvers, Mass.)

Freshman Sara Costa (Tiverton, R.I.) ousted her opponent senior Nicole Hamilton (Georgia, Vt.) 6-0, 6-1 at the #2 singles event.

In #3 singles, Johnson State’s freshman Rebecca Quarentiello (Newburyport, Mass.) won both sets 6-3, 6-4 from sophomore Carolina Ynguanzo (Springfield, Mass.).  The #1 singles match was the last to finish with junior Wildcat Julia Bendzin  (Poestenkill, N.Y.) outlasting senior Chelsie O’Connell 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.

Bay Path took two of the three doubles matches. Bendzin and Fox won the #2 doubles spot 8-2, while partners’ Brittnea Frazer (Lanesborough, Mass.) and Cristina Ruiz (Waterbury, Conn.) shut down their opponents 8-0. Johnson State’s O’Connell and Quarantiello won the #1 doubles spot in a tie-breaker 9-8 to end the day.

Bay Path advances to 6-1 on the season while Johnson State falls to 0-5 overall. The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow travelling to Russell Sage for a 1:00 p.m. start in Troy, New York.
