Bay Path Takes Becker in NECC Tennis Action

LONGMEADOW, Mass.--Bay Path College grabbed the advantage after singles action taking four out of the six from New England Collegiate Conference opponent Becker College in NCAA Division III women’s tennis action today. After doubles action, the Wildcats sealed the deal winning a close 5-4 against the Becker Hawks.
Finishing first, the #4 singles match had freshman Sara Costa (Tiverton, R.I.) quickly ousting sophomore Danielle Stryker (Ledyard, Conn.) 6-1, 6-2. Becker took the next single’s point with sophomore Catherine Sivret (Stow, Mass.) defeating sophomore Lauren Hangasky (Ludlow, Mass.) 6-3, 6-4.
Becker proceeded to win another point with freshman Shauna McNally (Shrewsbury, Mass.) grabbing the #5 singles match from junior Kara Fox (Biddeford, Maine) 6-2, 6-4. The Maroon and White net woman junior Julie Bendzin (Poestenkill, N.Y.) knotted the score with a victory at the #3 singles action. Bendzin came from behind to defeat freshman Megan Nessan (Levittown, Penn.) 2-6, 6-0, 6-0.
In the #1 singles, Wildcats senior Raquel Babeu (North Adams, Mass.) defeated senior Allison Flynn (Wilmington, Mass.) 6-4, 6-4 to take the advantage.
The singles match of the day came at the #6 position which lasted almost three and ½ hours. After a hard fought battle by both student-athletes Bay Path junior Cristina Ruiz (Waterbury, Conn.) overtook freshman Stephanie Sabolik (Stony Point, N.Y.) 3-6, 6-2, 7-6.
In doubles action, Becker’s tandem Sivret and Nesson took the #1 doubles match 8-2 from Bay Path’s Babeu and Hangasky.
Ruiz and Costa tallied the final game winning point for the Wildcats in the #3 doubles match. Partners Ruiz and Costa (5-0) continue their undefeated streak with an 8-6 victory against Stryker and McNally.
At 9:00 p.m., the Hawks’ duo Flynn and Sabolik won the #2 doubles action defeating the Wildcats’ Bendzin and sophomore, NECC Player of the Week, Carolina Ynguanzo (Springfield, Mass.) 8-4 in the final match of the day.
Bay Path tops the NECC with a 5-1 overall record and 2-0 in conference play. Becker falls to 1-3 on the year and 0-1 in NECC play. Bay Path will be back in action on Saturday, September 20th hosting Johnson State at a 1:00 p.m. start time.
