LONGMEADOW, Mass.---The Wildcats of Bay Path had a rough afternoon falling 7-0 to the Blue Jays of Saint Joseph in NCAA Division III women’s soccer action today at the Bryan Field.
The Blue Jays struck early with the first goal and eventual game winning shot in the first minute of action when sophomore forward Eva Peart (Bloomfield, Conn.) netted goal one off a cross by freshman midfielder Jessica Krol (Milford, Conn.).
Bay Path was unable to handle the scoring frenzy of Saint Joseph notching two more goals in the first half and finishing up with their seventh and final goal in the 68th minute of play. Krol added another assist as well as Peart for the Blue Jays. Sophomore teammate Paige Briglia (Watertown, Mass.) was one goal shy of a hat trick scoring twice, the first in the 23rd minute off an assist by junior defender Susie McKenna (Southerbury, Conn.) and off a long ball by Peart in the 49 th minute of the second half.
Saint Joseph’s bench played significant minutes with three key players scoring on the offense including freshman forward Stacey Rutledge (Meriden, Conn.), senior midfielder Emily Johnson( Avon, Conn.) and freshman forward Krista Watts (Wolcott, Conn.). Rounding off the scoring came from junior midfielder Amanda Couto (Lebanon, Conn.) who made a last minute start after a lost jersey by teammate Johnson.
Junior keeper Samantha Gunseth (Swanzey, N.H.) had 14 saves for Bay Path. St. Joseph had 23 shots on 39 shots on goal. Senior defender Wendy Rathe (Beverly, Mass.) made a great save in the net after a corner kick for Bay Path preventing another goal by the Blue Jays.
St. Joseph is now 2-2 on the season while Bay Path is now 0-2 overall. The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday, September 13 hosting their first NECC game against Daniel Webster at 1:00 p.m.
