WNEC Too Much for Bay Path

LONGMEADOW, Mass.—The Wildcats of Bay Path were unable to hold onto to their ten game winning streak succumbing 8-1 to local NCAA DIII rivals Western New England in women’s tennis action today. Despite the loss, the Wildcats honored lone senior Raquel Babeu (North Adams, Mass.) in the senior day festivities.
The Golden Bears swept the singles action earning all five points to win the match before even heading into doubles action.
In the #1 singles match, junior Kristen Ayers (Acton, Mass.) easily finished off Babeu in the first win of the day 6-0, 6-1. The #3 singles match was the next to finish with junior Kara Fox (Biddeford, Maine) falling 6-1, 6-2 to the Golden Bears’ senior Nicole Freed (Jersey Shore, Penn.). Right on their heels were the #6 singles competition, junior Cristina Ruiz (Waterbury, Conn.) lost 6-0, 6-1 to freshman Christina Barbarisi (Feeding Hills, Mass.).
The #5 flight finished within five minutes of the #6 players. WNEC’s junior Kelly Murname (Cheshire, Conn.) shut-down the Wildcats’ sophomore Carolina Ynquanzo (Springfield, Mass.) 6-0, 6-0. The final two singles matches took some time to finish ultimately deciding the victory for the Golden Bears.
Maroon and White net-woman, junior Julia Bendzin (Poestenkill, N.Y.) faced freshman Nicole DeSimone (Feeding Hills, Mass.) in the #2 singles action falling 6-2, 6-3. The only Wildcat to take a set in singles action was freshman Sara Costa (Tiverton, R.I.). Costa fell in a tough fought battle to fellow freshman Jessica Haffner (Suffield, Conn.) 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 in tie-breaker action.
In doubles action, WNEC’s pair of Freed and Haffner shut-down Bendzin and Fox 8-0 in the #2 spot. Honored senior Babeu and partner Ynguanzo lost 8-2 to Ayers and DeSimone.
The undefeated Wildcat #3 tandem of Ruiz and Costa are now 9-0 on the season as they plowed through the Golden Bears’ Murname and junior Colleen Swan (Milford, Conn.) 8-6. Costa and Ruiz were the only Bay Path win off the match.
Bay Path is now 10-2 overall and Western New England advances to 8-5 on the season. Bay Path finishes off NECC play on Saturday, 11th traveling to Mitchell for a 1:00 p.m. start.
