Raquel Babeu named NECC Player of the Year

LONGMEADOW, MA—Bay Path College senior Raquel Babeu of North Adams, MA, was named the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Women’s Tennis Player of the Year during the 2008 NECC Women’s Tennis All-Conference Teams and Awards.
Babeu is a four-year member of the Wildcats’ tennis team and will graduate spring ‘09 from Bay Path with a Bachelor of Science in legal studies. Babeu won the 2007 Women’s Tennis Player of the Year in the North Atlantic Conference Bay Path’s former league. She finished the NECC regular season play with a 6-0 singles record and 4-1 in conference doubles action. Overall, Babeu finished the year with a 9-3 #1 singles record and 6-4 #1 doubles record.
“This has been a great year, and Bay Path has come a long way this season,” said Babeu. “I couldn’t have done as well my senior year without my team, and I am very proud of our success.”
Babeu was unanimously selected for the 2008 ALL-NECC Women’s Tennis First Team Singles, and was joined by Bay Path junior Julia Bendzin of Poestenkill, NY, and freshman Sarah Costa of Tiverton, RI. Costa and Bendzin joined Bay Path junior Cristina Ruiz of Waterbury, CT, and junior Kara Fox of Biddeford, ME, respectively, for the ALL-NECC Women’s Tennis First Team Doubles.
Becker College freshman Shauna McNally received the 2008 NECC Rookie of the Year Award, and Mitchell College’s Rick Carmona was named 2008 NECC Coach of the Year. The Mitchell Mariners, Carmona’s team, received the 2008 Team Sportsmanship Award. Voting for the All-NECC Team and each of the major awards was conducted among NECC women’s tennis coaches.
