Wildcats Soccer Picks Up First Win of the Season

BENNINGTON, Vt.—The Wildcats of Bay Path after two ties have finally able to return to their winning ways of the their glory days and defeat New England Collegiate Conference rivals the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont 6-1 in NCAA II women’s soccer action today.
Four different Wildcats were able to score for today’s long awaited victory. Sophomore forward Jacqui Siddle(Palmer, Mass. ) and junior midfielder Jessica Hunt (Madison, Conn.) led their team with two goals apiece tallying a combined eight points on the match. Both Siddle and Hunt lead their team for the season each with three goals.
Siddle struck first finding the back of the net for Bay Path after an early corner kick in the 4th minute of play. Senior captain defender Michelle Deyorio launched the eventual game-winner for the “Maroon and White” in the 10th minute of play. This goal is Deyorio’s second on the season.
Fellow senior captain midfielder Victoria Malanowski (Windsor, Conn.) netted her first goal of the 2008 season in the 23rd minute of play placing an insurance point on the score board for the Wildcats.
Siddle again struck launching her second goal of the game in the 42nd minute of play prior to the half-time break.
Heading into the second half with the score 4-0 in favor of Bay Path, Head Coach Keri Verdecchia decided to let sophomore Kate Lowy (Burlington, Vt.) replace junior starting keeper Sam Gunseth(Swanzey, N.H.) in goal. Lowy was able to see some time in the net in front of her hometown fans.
Gunseth finished her 45 minutes of play facing only one shot. Lowy had one goal against for her 45 minutes of play.
The Mountaineers’ junior Kimberly Bevis (Valley Falls, N.Y.) broke up Bay Path’s shut-out in the 47th minute of play scoring what would prove to be Southern Vermont’s lone goal of the game.
Bay Path answered back immediately in the 50th minute when Hunt scored her first goal of the game putting the Wildcats ahead 5-1. Hunt would again launch a shot in the 75th minute to finish off the Wildcats scoring.
Freshman goal keeper Jillian Neudecker (Johnsonville, N.Y.) suffered the loss allowing six goals against while facing 26 shots. She had nine saves in her 90 minutes of play.
Bay Path is now 1-8-2 on the season and 1-2-1 in the NECC, while Southern Vermont is 0-11-0 overall and 0-6-0 in conference play. The Wildcats will be back in action traveling to SUNY Cobleskill on Thursday, October 16 at 4:00 p.m. start time.
