Massachusetts Licensure: Severe Disabilities
Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities
36 Credits
All students seeking initial licensure must:
- Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university;
- Complete six 3-credit course in severe disabilities and each course includes a pre-practicum;
- Complete a supervised practicum in severe disabilities;
- Pass all MTEL tests required by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education prior to entering practicum.
Required Courses and Practicum
All students must take the following 3 credit courses for initial licensure:
SPE 505 Inclusion, Consultation and Collaboration for Meaningful Access to Curriculum SPE 511 Applied Behavior Analysis
SPE 515 Foundations for Understanding Inclusive Schools
SPE 520 Learners with Special Needs
SPE 525 Working with Struggling Readers
SPE 531 Teaching and Assessing Students with Severe Disabilities
Electives (6 credits)
SPE 557 Practicum – Severe Disabilities – 12 credits*
*Students enroll in SPE 557 Practicum for Severe Disabilities for two semesters.
Optional Add-on License
- Moderate Licensure – Complete two additional three credit courses and a 150 hours practicum in moderate disabilities for a total of twelve credits in addition to passing the Foundations of Reading Test.
